Astigmatism; The cornea (the transparent layer at the front of the eye) refracts the rays coming into the eye. For the eye to see clearly, these refracted rays must be focused on the retina, which is the retina at the back of the eye.
The eye’s refractive eye can focus light rays on the retina function it takes place in the normal course. If the rays are not focused on the retina and a blurry image occurs, a refractive error occurs.
Astigmatism is the congenital deformity of the foremost transparent layer (cornea) of our eye. Astigmats see both far and near blurred and cannot see objects clearly and properly.
Causes of Astigmatism
Astigmatism occurs because the cornea should normally have a round shape like an orange, but an elliptical shape like an egg. Those with astigmatism see the point shapes they look at as elongated and scattered.
Astigmatism is a simple problem with the eye focusing on light. It is usually congenital and can be seen with myopia or hyperopia.
It can also develop after an eye injury or eye surgery as another cause.
What are Astigmatism Degrees?
Astigmatism remains almost the same over time, no significant increase or decrease is observed.
What Causes Astigmatism To Worsen?
Astigmatism is not worsened by reading in poor light, staring too closely at the TV, or squinting.
Astigmats have difficulty driving at night due to light scattering. These people may see distant objects blurred and wavy. Especially those with the high disease experience prominent eye and headache apart from being unable to see clearly.
Symptoms of astigmatism are usually as follows:
- Blurred vision
- Double vision
- Shadowy vision
- Head and eye pain,
- Eye strain and headache after prolonged reading or focusing on something
- Squinting eyes to see clearly,
- Difficulty in vision while driving at night.
These symptoms of astigmatism can make it difficult for you to do your daily activities. If you have symptoms like the above, make sure to consult an ophthalmologist. The disease is a problem that can be corrected with glasses, contact lenses, and laser treatment.
Astigmatism symptoms in children may not be detected because your child is not aware of or expresses this condition. Therefore, routine eye examinations are very important in children. These examinations:
- Within 6 months after birth
- 2, 5-3 years old
- Before starting school
- It is held every 1 or two years during the school term.
Astigmatism diagnosis is determined by a simple eye examination. It can be treated with glasses and contact lenses as well as laser or intraocular lens surgery.
The lenses are curved to correct the astigmatic shape of the cornea or lens that causes blurred vision. It is the most common and simple treatment method for disease treatment.
Wearing glasses does not affect the degree of disease. If glasses are not used, there will be no clear vision, but glasses do not cause progress or fall.
Soft contact lenses called toric lenses for astigmatism, gas-permeable hard contact lenses may be preferred if the degree of astigmatism is higher.
Eye Laser Surgery
Reshaping the cornea with laser eye surgery with other treatment methods for those who do not prefer Eyeglasses and contact lenses. So your eyes can focus light rays better.
There is no 100% guarantee of zero numbers after laser. However, approximately 95 out of 100 people who have a laser for astigmatism and myopia can see without glasses or contact lenses.
If you are having problems with your health, you should go to the doctor or call 911. If you want to know more about these, you should follow U.S. Department of Health & Human Services.
